Pond-Free Water Features

Pond-free water features exchange the open water of a pond for a gravel-topped excavation, maximizing visual impact while minimizing headaches and maintenance. Typically, a pump placed in a protective vault inside a lined reservoir continuously recirculates water over a stream or waterfall. A bed of gravel hides the basin, vault and plumbing from view leaving only the stream and waterfall visible in full splendor. Pond-free water features provide all the visual interest without the care and upkeep of a pond ecosystem; there is no open water to collect debris or to worry about. Pond-free water features can be turned on and off at will, unlike ponds. No wonder they've become so popular!

Self-Contained Water Features

Self-contained water features, such as the one pictured here, exchange the open water of a pond or stream for a completely enclosed reservoir system which makes them easy to construct and maintain. Best of all, self-contained water features are extremely versatile! They can be sited anywhere outside the home through walls, above or below ground, on or in patios and walkways or anywhere else you can think up. The possibilities are endless! Self-contained water features provide all the visual interest without the care and upkeep of a pond ecosystem; there is no open water to collect debris or to worry about, and self-contained water features can be turned on and off at will, unlike ponds.

Questions To Ask About Water Features

  • Are there any safety concerns with a pond-free water feature? Because there is no pool of water, a pond-free water feature is a great option if you are concerned about safety issues associated with a traditional pond.
  • How often will I need to add water? As often as needed. The amount of water you will need to add will vary due to interior or exterior siting, sun, wind, temperature, humidity, even splash. Check the water level every few days to make sure that the pump is always fully submerged. You might want to install an Auto fill Kit connected to a garden hose or sprinkler line to automatically maintain the correct water level.
  • Do I need to winterize my pond-free water feature? It is a good idea to winterize your water feature when temperatures will stay below freezing for extended lengths of time. Eco-Systems, inc. will remove the pump, fountain basin, drain and store it in a cool, dry place out of the weather.
